Eastern Produce Kenya (EPK) has commissioned an equipped information, communication and technology (ICT) lab and three science laboratories in Nandi County.

As part of the firm’s social investment endeavours and commitment to supporting the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) rollout in the county, EPK has commissioned a new ICT Lab at Taboiyat Senior Secondary School and the three science laboratories at Chemomi, Siret, and Kaputi Junior Schools, valued at Kshs 7 million.

This brings the company’s investment in education to over KShs 26 million over the last 8 months, following earlier handovers to various schools and scholarship programs.

Speaking at the handover event, EPK’s Company Director Leah Kibii Chirchir said the firm has also invested over KShs. 1 million since 2024 towards supporting special needs education in the county. “In line with our inclusivity agenda, EPK is supporting special needs education, including the provision of instructional learning materials and classroom furniture to Kibabet, Nandi Hills Township and Lelwak Primary Schools,” she said at the function presided over by Tinderet MP Julius Melly.

Additionally, EPK has incorporated four new students into its scholarship program, including one special needs student, and brings the total number of scholarships to seven. This aligns with its commitment to SDG 4 - equitable quality education for all.

This effort is part of EPK’s ongoing education initiatives in Nandi County, to enhance access to and quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in local communities, fostering a stronger foundation in STEM for the learners.

“We’re here today as a testament to our continuous partnership with our communities. We’re particularly keen on inclusive access to quality education, which is why we have invested in science laboratories for Junior schools aligned with the Government’s CBC Curriculum. This aims to enable our learners to adopt a practical approach, incorporating critical thinking and problem-solving skills from the early stages of learning,” she said.

Mrs. Chirchir added,
"Ultimately, education is our investment in the future, as it contributes to social stability, improved health, and livelihoods, and is a driver of long-term economic growth. We aim to catalyze and promote lifelong learning opportunities in our communities.”

Editor’s Note

EPK recently launched its secondary school education scholarship program that seeks to support and empower underprivileged high achievers by allowing them to pursue their educational aspirations. The initiative now has 7 students receiving full scholarships, including one special needs student.

EPK continues to work towards realising Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education through its continuous community efforts. It provides education to the children of its employees through the facilitation of bursaries and establishes and improves the quality of schools within and near its plantations. The company’s education projects have benefitted over 60,000 learners since 2019, with investments of more than KShs. 48 million.

EPK has established 15 schools within its estates already, and continues its efforts to create a positive impact on the educational landscape and the broader community, supporting students to access quality education and equal education opportunities.

The company has supported Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres with appropriate classroom furniture that encourages learning. It has also supported schools to enhance inclusion and increase digital literacy through computer donations, assisting schools in establishing computer labs for learning, and providing access to computers for administrative use, such as tracking performance and internal assessments.

Additionally, the company is supporting adolescent girls and boys in schools with life skills education and support with menstruation products, helping to steady the attendance of girls in schools, thus leading on the path of gender equality.
